Foundational Principles of the Sikh Faith
The core spiritual, ethical, and egalitarian foundations of Sikhism as outlined by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Sri Amritsar.
Universal Wisdom for Humanity
Founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1469 in the Punjab, Sikhism is the world’s fifth-largest organized religion. Its philosophy centers on active righteous living, universal equality, devotion to One Creator (Ik Onkar), and the eradication of social injustice.
ਛੇ ਮੂਲ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ · Six Pillars
Essential Pillars of Gurmat Philosophy
These six core tenets distinguish the Sikh worldview — emphasizing inner truth, active compassion, rational contemplation, and equality before God.
A Practical Religion
Sikh faith is fundamentally a practical religion of everyday life. It does not consist of rigid dogmas, ascetic renunciation, or empty outward observances. The Gurus taught that true spirituality is realized while living actively in society, earning an honest livelihood (Kirat Karo), and sharing with those in need (Vand Chhako).
A Universal Religion
Sikh faith affirms the oneness of Creation and recognizes all humanity as one single divine family (ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਤ ਸਬੈ ਏਕੈ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਬੋ). It rejects discrimination based on caste, creed, race, gender, or nationality, opening the four doors of the Gurdwara to all people from all walks of life equally.
Opposition to Ritualism
Sikh faith is opposed to formalistic rituals, superstitions, fasts, pilgrimages, and priestly intermediaries. Guru Nanak Dev Ji proclaimed that Truth is the highest virtue, but higher still is truthful living. Outward religious symbols have meaning only when matched by inward integrity and compassion.
Evidence-Based & Rational Faith
Sikh faith does not enjoin blind faith or unthinking obedience. Spiritual awakening begins with earnest enquiry, contemplation of divine wisdom (Gurbani Vichar), and moral discernment. The intellect is viewed as a God-given gift to be enlightened by the Guru’s Shabad, not extinguished by dogma.
Hope, Grace & Chardi Kala
Sikh faith is a faith of perpetual optimism and joyful resilience (Chardi Kala). While it recognizes the natural law of cause and effect (Karma), it affirms that through divine grace (Nadar), sincere prayer (Ardas), and righteous action, any soul can rise above past conditioning and attain liberation.
Democratic Spirit & Collective Authority
Sikh faith embodies a deeply democratic ethos. Tenth Patshah Guru Gobind Singh Ji vested perpetual spiritual authority in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and temporal authority in the collective body of initiated Sikhs, the Guru Panth. Decisions for the common welfare are resolved democratically through Gurmatta in Sangat.
