ਮਰਯਾਦਾ · Customs & Etiquette

When you arrive

A few simple customs show respect to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sewadars are always on hand and happy to guide you — please just ask.

1

Cover your head

Everyone — men, women and children — covers their head inside. Clean head scarves are provided at the entrance.

2

Remove your shoes

Leave shoes in the designated shoe room and wash your hands before entering the Darbar Sahib hall.

3

No tobacco, alcohol or drugs

These substances are strictly prohibited anywhere on the Gurdwara Sahib grounds and premises.

4

Sit respectfully

Sit comfortably on the carpet facing Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Please avoid pointing your feet towards Guru Sahib. Chairs are available for elders or anyone in need.

5

Phones on silent

Please switch phones to silent mode in the Darbar Sahib. Always ask a Sewadar before taking photos or recordings.

6

Dress modestly

Wear comfortable, modest clothing suitable for sitting cross-legged on the floor. No special attire is required.

What happens during Diwan

A typical congregational gathering follows these six timeless stages:

1

Kirtan

Devotional singing of Gurbani with harmonium and traditional percussion.

2

Katha

Discourse and exposition explaining the wisdom of Gurbani and Sikh history.

3

Ardaas

The entire Sangat stands together in quiet reverence for the community supplication prayer.

4

Hukamnama

ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ

A divine order taken at random from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, read aloud with its reflection.

5

Karah Parshad

ਕੜਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ

A sacred sweet blessed during Ardaas, received respectfully in cupped hands.

6

Langar

ਲੰਗਰ

Everyone sits together in Pangat (lines) on the floor to share a wholesome, free vegetarian meal.

Common questions

Answers for first-time visitors, families, and community members.

Do I need to be Sikh to visit?

No. Gurdwara Sahib Darwin is open to everyone regardless of faith, nationality, gender, or background. We warmly welcome all members of the Darwin and Northern Territory community.

Is Langar really free?

Yes, absolutely. Guru ka Langar has been a foundational institution of Sikhi for over 500 years. It is a wholesome, hot vegetarian meal prepared with Sewa (selfless service) and served freely to all who visit.

Can I bring my children?

Yes, families and children of all ages are very welcome. Children also cover their heads and remove their shoes like everyone else.

Can schools, universities, or community groups visit?

Yes! We regularly host school excursions, university groups, and community visitors. Please contact us in advance so Sewadars can arrange a warm welcome and guided walkthrough.

Is there parking and wheelchair access?

Free parking is available on-site at 8 Earhart Court. Step-free ramp access is available for prams and wheelchairs into both the main Darbar Sahib hall and the Guru ka Langar dining hall, with chairs and tables provided for elderly visitors and anyone with mobility needs.
