Is an Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Sahib Darwin legally binding under Australian law?

No. SANTI is not an authorised civil marriage celebrant under the Australian Marriage Act 1961 and does not employ a resident civil celebrant. While SANTI administers the sacred religious rites of the Anand Karaj, couples wishing to have their marriage legally registered in Australia must independently engage an authorised civil marriage celebrant in the Northern Territory to witness statutory declarations, conduct civil vows, and lodge the official marriage certificate with the NT Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

How do I book an Anand Karaj (Sikh wedding) in Darwin?

To arrange an Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Sahib Darwin (8 Earhart Court, Marrara NT), submit a booking inquiry via the SANTI Sewa or Contact page at least 2 to 3 months in advance. This ensures Darbar Hall reservation, Ragi Jatha availability for the Four Laavan recital, and coordination for Guru ka Langar.

What are the religious requirements for an Anand Karaj?

In accordance with the Sikh Rehat Maryada (Panthic Code of Conduct), both bride and groom must profess the Sikh faith. All wedding guests must cover their heads, remove footwear before entering, dress modestly, and sit respectfully on the carpeted floor in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

What food is served at a Gurdwara wedding?

Strictly vegetarian Guru ka Langar is prepared and served to all wedding guests at the Gurdwara Sahib. Meat, eggs, fish, alcohol, tobacco, and intoxicants are strictly prohibited anywhere on Gurdwara premises.
