Guru ka Langar — Free Community Kitchen

At Gurdwara Sahib Darwin, no one is a stranger. Every weekend and on every Gurpurb, our volunteer sewadars prepare and serve fresh, wholesome vegetarian meals free of charge to everyone who walks through our doors.

Open to Everyone

Founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji to abolish divisions of caste, creed, and status. All visitors sit together on the floor in equality (Pangat) and share the same meal.

100% Pure Vegetarian

Every dish — dal, seasonal sabzi, hot rotis, rice, and kheer — is strictly lacto-vegetarian (no meat, fish, or eggs) so people of every background can dine together comfortably.

Served Every Weekend

Served during and after Saturday Evening Diwan (4:30 PM – 8:00 PM) and Sunday Morning Diwan (10:30 AM – 1:30 PM) at 8 Earhart Court, Marrara.

First-Time Visitors

What to Expect in the Langar Hall

  • Cover your head & remove shoes: Just as in the Darbar Hall, heads remain covered with a scarf or rumal in the Langar Hall. Free headscarves are provided at the entrance.
  • Wash your hands: Hand-washing basins are located right outside the Langar Hall before you pick up a stainless-steel compartmentalised tray (Thali) and spoon.
  • Sit in rows (Pangat): Take a seat on the floor mats. Volunteer sewadars will walk down the rows serving warm rotis, dal, sabzi, rice, and water. Chairs and tables are available for elders or anyone with mobility needs.
  • Take only what you can finish: Food in Guru ka Langar is considered sacred blessing (Parshad). You are welcome to ask for seconds, and when finished, return your tray to the dishwashing bay.

3. Sponsor a Weekend Langar (Dhan Sewa)

Book a Saturday or Sunday Langar in honour of a family birth, birthday, wedding anniversary, or memorial Ardas.

Frequently Asked Questions about Langar

What is Guru ka Langar?

Guru ka Langar (the Guru’s free kitchen) is a 500-year-old Sikh institution founded by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji to uphold human equality, selfless service (Sewa), and sharing with others (Vand Chhako). Everyone sits together on the floor as equals (Pangat) to share a freshly cooked vegetarian meal, regardless of religion, caste, gender, background, or economic status.

Is Langar completely free, and can non-Sikhs eat Langar?

Yes. Guru ka Langar is 100% free of charge, and every person in Darwin — of any faith or no faith — is warmly welcomed. There is no obligation to donate or belong to the Sikh faith.

When is Langar served at Gurdwara Sahib Darwin?

Full community Langar is served following the weekly Kirtan Diwan every Saturday evening (Diwan 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM) and Sunday midday (Diwan 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM), as well as on major Gurpurbs and Vaisakhi celebrations. Light tea (Chaa) and refreshments are also available during daily opening hours (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM).

What kind of food is served in Langar?

All food prepared in the Gurdwara Langar kitchen is strictly lacto-vegetarian so that people of all religious and cultural backgrounds can eat together at one table. A typical meal includes lentil curry (Dal), seasonal vegetable curry (Sabzi), wholewheat flatbread (Roti), steamed rice, yoghurt (Dahi), sweet pudding (Kheer or Karah Parshad), and spiced tea (Chaa). No meat, fish, eggs, or alcohol are ever permitted on the premises.

How can I sponsor a weekend Langar or donate groceries in Darwin?

Families, individuals, and community members can sponsor a Saturday evening or Sunday midday Langar to mark a birthday, anniversary, memorial, or thanksgiving, or donate dry rations (atta, basmati rice, lentils, cooking oil, milk, and fresh produce). Visit our Sewa Bookings or Donate page, or email administrator@santi.org.au to coordinate with the kitchen sewadars.
