Vaisakhi — commemorating the creation of the Khalsa Panth by Tenth Patshah Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Sri Anandpur Sahib in 1699 — is the largest annual gathering at Gurdwara Sahib Darwin.
Preparations begin weeks in advance as volunteers clean and decorate the Gurdwara precinct at 8 Earhart Court, Marrara, prepare festive sweets and savouries in the Langar kitchen, and commence the continuous 48-hour reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sri Akhand Path Sahib).
On Vaisakhi weekend, the entire Sangat gathers for the ceremonial changing of the Nishan Sahib Chola (the saffron Sikh flag), soulful Shabads sung by children from the SANTI Kirtan classes and visiting Ragi Jathas, spirited Gatka martial arts exhibitions on the Gurdwara grounds, and a joyful community feast open to friends and neighbours from across Darwin.
