In the heart of Darwin’s humid January Build-Up and Wet Season, outdoor civic celebrations on Australia Day demand constant hydration. Drawing direct inspiration from the Sikh heritage of Chabeel and Jal Sewa (serving cool water to passers-by), members of the Sikh Association of Northern Territory Inc. (SANTI) gather early in the morning with marquees, ice tubs, and pallets of chilled water.
This tradition honours the legacy of Bhai Kanhaiya Ji in the court of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who served water to every thirsty soul without ever asking their background, creed, or identity. Families, children, and elders from the Darwin Sangat work shoulder-to-shoulder greeting fellow Territorians with a warm smile and cold refreshments.
Beyond relieving the tropical heat, the Australia Day Water Sewa has become one of SANTI’s most cherished grass-roots bridges with the wider Northern Territory community — inviting conversations about Sikh values of Vand Chhako (sharing with others) and Sarbat da Bhala (the wellbeing of all humanity).
